Tamil Nadu sent 13 athletes to the Paris 2024 Olympics — the largest state contingent after the Hindi belt. It hosts the Khelo India Youth Games and finished second in the national medal tally. Its government allocated ₹485 crore to SDAT in 2025–26 alone. It built 100 new sports facilities in four years. It produced India's first fencer at an Olympics, its first direct-entry woman sailor, a Commonwealth Games double gold weightlifter, a sprint relay Asian Games gold medallist from a Tiruchirappalli village, and a Paralympic high jump gold medallist from a family of vegetable sellers in Salem. And yet: Tamil Nadu has never produced a single individual Olympic medal. Not one. This is not a gap. It is a wound. And it is the exact wound that Venture S4 was built to heal.

A drunk bus driver ran over a five-year-old boy walking to school in the village of Periyavadagampatti, Salem. His right leg was amputated below the knee. His father had left. When Mariyappan won Paralympic gold in Rio 2016 — jumping 1.89 metres, an Asian record — she was selling vegetables outside and did not know her son had just become a national hero.

His school PE teacher noticed him. One teacher. That is the entire margin between Tamil Nadu's greatest sporting story and anonymity. He went on to win medals at three consecutive Paralympics — the only Indian to do so. A biopic was commissioned. Sachin Tendulkar runs a sports fund in his name. And the question no one asks: how many more Mariyappans are in the villages of Salem, Villupuram, and Tirunelveli right now — and who is looking?

Injuries — recurring, undertreated, the product of training without adequate sports science support — ended his Olympic dream before it was complete. He enrolled in the Madras Regiment in 2011 just to get training facilities his family could not afford. Tamil Nadu produced a world-class quarter-miler and did not have the infrastructure to protect him.
